Lead Paint Overview
Lead is a highly toxic heavy metal that has the potential to cause a range of long-term health issues, especially in younger children. Once lead is absorbed or ingested into the body, the body cannot remove it. This can cause damage to the brain and other vital organs within the body.
Symptoms
Symptoms of lead poisoning can include headaches, stomachaches, nausea, tiredness, and irritability. Interestingly enough, children who have significant lead amounts in their bodies may not show any symptoms at all. Learn more about Lead Paint from the Environmental Protection Agency.
Lead Paint Facts
- Lead paint was banned in homes in 1978 – Homes built prior to 1978 may contain lead paint. Older home, built before 1950 are very likely to contain lead paint.
- Lead dust is produced from lead paint – which is very fine and cannot be seen.
- Children between the ages of 1 and 2 are at the greatest risk of lead poisoning – as they are crawling and exploring and everything at these ages end up in their mouths
- Lead poisoning usually occurs when children put lead dust in their mouths after touching contaminated areas and/or from ingesting lead paint chips
About Our Central Florida Lead Paint Testing
We can provide you peace of mind and help keep you and your family safe with our professional lab testing. Our inspectors are specially trained to examine your home and determine where the best place is to take a sample or two to send to our lab for analysis.
From our experience in the Greater Orlando Area – homes built prior to 1978 still present a lead hazard to the occupants of the home, even if the home was recently renovated.
Other Considerations
In older homes, we always recommend testing for lead paint and performing a Mold Air Quality Test as well. By bundling inspections with your full home inspection we can help save you money on all inspections.
Lead Paint Testing Requirements
- We always recommend taking at least two samples within the home when testing for lead paint
- Samples are taken from inconspicuous locations and are roughly 2in x 2in worth of material
- We overnight these samples to our lab here in FL and we receive the results back typically within 3 business days.
- You receive a full spectrum lab report which explains the results of the test, whether lead was present in the samples, and if the levels of lead were within EPA-Approved norms.
